Abstract: 5 pages in length. In 1802, Thomas Bruce, the seventh Earl of Elgin, known as Lord Elgin, secured permission to remove what the sultan called some pieces of stone with inscriptions or figures from the temple of idols at the Parthenon, in Athens, Greece. Ever since gaining independence in 1812, Greece has demanded the return of the marbles. They are national treasures. Does Greece have a right to demand their return? This paper is a close examination of the arguments on both sides that can perhaps give more insight to these and other questions. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
