Was Couture Clothing As Popular In The 19th Century As It Is Today?

Abstract: 5 pages in length. Couture - also known as haute couture - plays an historical role in the manner by which fashion has come to reflect an individual's social, professional and personal status, whether perceived or legitimate. Clothes, which have long separated cultural classes to the point where a peasant could be instantly differentiated from the royal court, took a considerable turn in 19th-century Paris that turned 'simple dressmaking trade into an art form' (Schroll 88). This metamorphosis ultimately took hold in American culture and came to illustrate a great deal about who a person was or wanted to be; it is with this notion in mind that couture's popularity was just as identifiable in the nineteenth century as it is today as a declaration of modernity.
