Our Evolving Concept of the "Picturesque" Landscape

Abstract: A 3 page consideration of how our concept of man's impact on the environment has changed over time. The author reviews the literature to support the contention that, as Robert Smithson contends in his discussion of "Frederick Law Olmsted and the Dialectical Landscape", the concept of "picturesque" is indeed a material one and one that has been in place since ancient times.
