Abstract: The news out of Europe has been, for the most part, very positive and indicative of changes for the better. The strength of the European Union and the incorporation of most of the major currencies into one has the world waiting to see how the economic situation stands at the end of the first quarter of 1999. Of all the countries currently included as members in the European Union, Spain has made the most progress since joining. Isolated and backward just 20 years ago, Spain is emerging as a maverick in the Continent's transformation into a more effective economic competitor. It is in the front ranks of countries revamping the role of the state, slashing taxes, overhauling labor markets, and nurturing entrepreneurs long frustrated by interventionist regimes. This 6 page paper examines the negative impacts of membership in the European Union on Spain. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
