Rousseau/Role of Religion

Abstract: A 9 page essay that analyzes the argument of Jean Jacques Rousseau in regard to the role of religion in society. The role that Rousseau envisioned for religion was more political than spiritual in nature, as he saw religion as performing a motivational function in regards to civic duty. He particularly favored a civil religion created and ordained by a sovereign, and argued that this form of religion could act an instrument of politics that motivated people to obey the law. The writer examines Rousseau's The Social Contract and his Second Discourse on Inequality. No additional sources cited.
