Abstract: (8 pp) Previous to the seventeenth century, artists, and their work were supported by wealthy patrons: these would have been either the Church itself, royalty or the upper class of the country. After the Reformation and the Counter-reformation, coupled with the rise of the middle class, economics shifted, as did art patronage.
