In "The Many-Headed Hydra: Sailors, Slaves, Commoners, and the Hidden History of the Revolutionary Atlantic" authors Peter Linebaugh and Marcus Rediker detail how our shores were viewed as great economic opportunity by a variety of foreign interests. Their attempts as a monopoly would be foiled, however, by the collective efforts of some of Americas most destitute classes. No additional sources are listed.
