Abstract: A nine page paper which traces the development of the British pub as a cultural institution from Roman times up to the present day. The writer looks at the changes brought about by industrialisation, changes in musical tastes, the yuppie-culture of the 1980s and the growth of the club scene in the 1990s, and the way in which the British pub is beginning to return to its traditional roots.
