Capoeira

Abstract: Capoeira is an ancient martial art which incorporates dance, music and elements of play. It is one of the defining characteristics of a rich Afro-Brazilian Bahia culture. Once stigmatized as a silly activity meant as simple entertainment for the poor black Brazilian descendants of slaves in earlier centuries, Capoeira is now considered a modern metaphor for cultural freedom and defiance. This 23 page paper examines the art form of Capoeira in relation to its positive contributions to cultural and social structural developments. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
