WHO and Pharmaceutical Industry Cooperation Serving Developing Nations

Abstract: A 15 page paper discussing the partnership activities of the World Health Organization and the world's leading pharmaceutical manufacturers. Detractors of the pharmaceutical industry deride it for concentrating on developing drugs for the diseases of prosperity while neglecting to develop drugs for tropical diseases, but these detractors fail to understand that development of a single drug can cost as much as $500 million and that businesses must have some promise of return. A new WHO-directed program, Medicines for Malaria Venture, is a collaboration seeking to raise the funds necessary for development. In the meantime, nearly all pharmaceutical companies regularly make substantial donations of medicines and supplies. Most are on the order of Merck's commitment to donate 1 million measles vaccination doses to Honduras over three years. Bibliography lists 12 sources.
