Catherine the Great of Russia

Abstract: (6pp) It has been argued that Catherine was an educated ruler, not necessarily an enlightened one. The argument being that the Enlightenment was a time when people were discussing abstract ideas, and attempting to reach consensus in the process. However in Europe this was mainly discussion between intellectuals, and since at the time of Catherine's reign only two percent of her subjects were literate, it would lead to a narrow ray of enlightenment on the formal sense. With the data out of the way, I believe that Catherine made every effort, and did make, or cause change, considering the social environment that was her arena. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
