The Shield of Athena Parthenos

Abstract: This 6 page report discusses the shield of the Athena Parthenos, a forty foot ancient statute. The report reviews the work of the sculptor Phidias and his subject Athena, goddess of wisdom and protectress of Athens. Greek art of this period was perceived, and then reflected, as the human ideal. It was a culture that created and collected objects as art, and then used that art for self-expression and social understanding. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
