Abstract: This 9 page paper looks at the events which lead to the break out of the first world war. The hypothesis of the paper is that although Germany is popularly held to blame for this war it is unfair to attribute all the blame to a single nation. Long and short terms causes are considered as well as the military build up, the role of the treaties and the Schlieffen plan are all discussed. The bibliography cites 6 sources.
