Abstract: This 98 page paper gives a background to European Monetary Union (EMU) The Euro is a currency that is perceived as bring strength both political and economic to the Euro Zone when it is implemented in full. The paper considers the history of European integration as a background for the behaviour of the different financial markets. The markets are considered from a regional as well as global perspective. Particular attention is paid to interaction with other trade agreements and trading relationships, especially the US. The last part of the paper looks at the effect that this has had on the banking sectors and also the influence it has had on Greece, one of the newest members to the EU ( consideration is also given to the political background of Greece prior to membership to enable the reader to place events into context. The bibliography cites 45 sources.
