Abstract: This 8 page report discusses the fact that in less than two decades, the pandemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has become an international health, social, and economic emergency. Not surprisingly, media coverage of AIDS, the impact of the disease, and research into the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has become an important channel of communication regarding treatment, research breakthroughs, and the development of new treatments. However, attention to the impact of HIV infection and AIDS in Third World nations has been less than comprehensive and exemplifies the ways in which the media (and society, in general) tends to neglect the devastating impact of the disease in places such as sub-Saharan Africa. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
